Elderberries are well adapted to growing without constant care and Black Lace is no exception. This cultivar is hardy, easy to grow and significantly deer-resistant. With finely cut, deep violet foliage and creamy pink colored flowers, Black Lace gives a very similar appearance to that of the Japanese Maple. The dark, lacy foliage surrounds oversized clusters of tiny blooms through spring and early Summer. Black Lace Elderberry, botanical name Sambucus nigra Eva, grows in USDA zones 4 to 9, enjoying full sun and reaching a height and spread of 6 ft. to 8 ft. The leaves are a dark purple, while the flowers are a light pink. This lacy and elegant Elderberry cultivar has a deep color wholly unique to itself and its large 10 clusters of flowers are as much a treat as the berries you can harvest.
